Getting to the heart of the matter

Gentlemen, the day of romance is upon us.

Whether we're ready for it or not, Sunday is Valentine's Day.In more traditional circles, it's a day when we are known to show our affection and shower our women with flowers, cards and gifts.Or, depending on her tastes, a chance to wine and dine her in a romantic setting. For those seriously in love who haven't taken the next step, it's a prime opportunity to pop the big question. However, the day doesn't have to be just about roses, chocolates and teddy bears. While those tried-and-true gifts are a good bet to please her, perhaps it's time to change things up.Suppose we were to take a moment to think outside of the proverbial candy box?We could, for instance, treat her to dinner and a movie.Or, take her shopping at her favorite store.Perhaps buy her a piece of jewelry. If we can muster up enough courage, accompany her to a Valentine's Day ball or dance party.Maybe sing her a romantic song.Write her a heartfelt poem.Cook her dinner.Make her breakfast in bed.Or, if feeling overly sentimental, renew wedding vows.I would consider nearly all of those scenarios.Dinner and a movie: Most assuredly.Take her shopping to her favorite store: Sure, why not?Buy her a piece of jewelry: Of course.Accompany her to a Valentine's Day ball or dance party: Chances are significantly better for a dance party.Sing her a romantic song: Possible, but likely more probable if we're talking karaoke. On the other hand, the rest would stand but only a minimal chance on my end.Cook her dinner: Unfortunately, my cooking skills are limited at best.Make her breakfast in bed: See directly above.Write her a heartfelt poem: I'm not much of a poet, and would rather let my actions speak louder than my words.Renew our wedding vows: Come on, I'm not quite THAT romantic. So, exactly which course of action do I have planned for my wife this Valentine's Day, you ask? That's for me to know, and her to find out.Unless, of course, she asks me to take her gambling at one of her favorite casinos. On second thought, maybe I will just stick to the roses, chocolates and stuffed animals after all.
