A Newmanstown truck driver has no idea as to why his big rig crashed into a parked car in Tamaqua on Tuesday afternoon.

Tamaqua Police were dispatched to Center Street, in the area of the Tamaqua Diner, at 2:30 p.m. for a crash involving a tractor-trailer and a parked car. On the scene, they found a silver 2001 Chevrolet sedan wedged between a 2003 Freightliner and the concrete base of the diner's iconic sign.Witnesses say the rig was traveling south on Center Street (Route 309) when the driver suddenly swerved, entered the northbound lane and then came to a stop after hitting the parked car. The rig's driver was identified as Leon James Martin, 49, of Newmanstown.EMS personnel found Martin to be somewhat unresponsive when they first arrived. When he did speak, he said he had no idea what happened.Martin refused medical treatment at the scene, then told officers his check engine light came on and the truck started swaying on its own. He didn't know what happened and appeared to be disoriented, so officers transported him to St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus in Coaldale for blood tests.Charges are pending the results of those tests.The Chevrolet, owned by Joanne Vallone of Pottsville, had severe damage and had to be towed from the scene.
