The Carbon County Sheriff's office has some new furniture thanks to an anonymous donor.

On Thursday, the county commissioners said Sheriff Anthony Harvilla received a donation of $6,900 worth of furniture from a local business.The donation includes 10 filing cabinets, a computer stand and 15 guest chairs to be used in the office, totaling $6,900.The board thanked Harvilla for his efforts, as well as to the local business that donated the furniture because it will save the county a lot of money."It's beautiful furniture," Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said.Harvilla said the donation came about through his personal contacts."Understanding the fiscal limitations of county government and the need for the sheriff's office for updated, usable office furniture, I inquired about a donation to the sheriff's office," Harvilla said. "The company, who wishes to remain anonymous, was very gracious and understanding of our situation and agreed to assist."The county maintenance crew then picked up the items and brought them back to the office."As a law enforcement agency, the sheriff's office periodically requests funding from the commissioners for various items and personnel to enhance security for county buildings and the public at large."We were very fortunate in this instance to have the ability to help the cause."In other matters, the commissioners voted on the following items:• Approve the reappointment of Brendan Lee of Jim Thorpe, Carol Getz of Albrightsville and Marigrace Heyer of Summit Hill to the Environmental Education Center Commission. Their terms expire Dec. 31, 2017.• Approve an agreement with Suzette Kurtz to provide logistics and accuracy testing of voting machines for the 2016 primary and general elections. Compensation will be $20 an hour, not to exceed 260 hours.• Approve the hiring of James J. Marks of Jim Thorpe as part-time seasonal park maintenance, effective April 11.• Approve the hiring of Richard Zimmerman of Lehighton as seasonal park ranger II, effective April 11.• Approve the change of status of Renee L. Russell of Weatherly from secretary II in the district attorney's office, to district justice secretary I in the district justices office, effective Feb. 16.• Approve the change of status of Matthew J. Yaich of Jim Thorpe from part-time automation clerk, Bureau of Collections/Clerk of Courts, to seasonal park ranger II, effective April 11.
