PV falls to Mounties

Efficient transition play wins basketball games.

The simple equation of the transition game is: defense plus turnovers equals points. And Stroudsburg quickly did the math on both sides of the ball during an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference battle with Pleasant Valley. The Mounties' relentless pressure defense led to many high percentage transition baskets during a 66-49 victory over the Bears."We played at a pace that we were a little more comfortable," said Stroudsburg head coach Rich Baker. "We got the stops that we needed and forced some turnovers. It was important that we set the tone and tempo of the game. We were able to enforce our will."Stroudsburg forced nine PV turnovers during the initial period, which didn't help the Bears trend in the right direction."We threw a lot of sloppy and lazy passes," said Pleasant Valley head coach Matt Gould. "We probably gave them close to eight to 10 points turning the ball over in the backcourt -and we didn't give ourselves an opportunity to score. It's deflating; if you have to look at it, I would say the pressure is what definitely got to us."The lead was as large as 10 points for Stroudsburg in the first half, but a 5-0 Bears' spurt before intermission cut the deficit to just six. Pleasant Valley drained five long-balls during the first two frames, which kept them in the game for a while."We're not the biggest team, we're not the most athletic team, but they bring their hard hats to work every day," Gould said. "You have to love that aspect of the team ... They could easily have thrown in the towel. We work, we fight, and we're young."PV cut the advantage to four points at the 6:23 mark of the third quarter, but four minutes later, the Mounties' lead was up to 15. Stroudsburg's Shon Wilson's nine-point third quarter is what propelled the Mounties. He led all scorers with 21 points."He's extremely confident," said Baker. "He made some big plays down the stretch ... We were able to get baskets and get into our full court pressure. We were pretty much able to wear them out."AND-ONE: MORE THAN A CLOTHING LINE … Stroudsburg was strong and tall around the rim all night. The Mounties scored six different "and-one" baskets and converted the extra foul shot on all of them.PV's MVP… It was Hall of Fame night at Pleasant Valley and Chris Barker received the team's MVP award for the game. "He's fearless," Gould said. "He goes inside and gets a bunch of rebounds. The beginning of the season he wasn't used to the speed of the game, but he's finally picked it up."A GREAT CAUSE … PV fans, players, and coaches were decked out in pink throughout the gymnasium to support the Lucy Fund, a cancer research organization that definitely has a ton of support in the Brodheadsville area.STROUDSBURGLamou 1-0-0-3, Brown 1-1-1-3, Collins 2-1-1-6, Hines 2-0-5-4, Bueno 6-2-3-14, Jackson 3-4-5-11, Wilson 7-6-10-21, Hayden 2-0-2-4, Kusz 0-0-0-0, Brady 0-0-0-0.
