A familiar face in the Panther Valley has joined Nesquehoning Borough Council, filling the vacant seat created by the resignation of Councilman Michael Sniscak earlier this month.

On Wednesday, council voted 4-2 to appoint Rosemary Porembo to the seat. Councilmen Don DeMarco, David DeMelfi, George Sabol III and President David Hawk voted in favor of the appointment, while council members Frank Jacobs and Mary Fox voted against the appointment.Nesquehoning Mayor Sam Kitchko then swore in Porembo, who took her seat at the table and the meeting commenced.Porembo has a long history in the Panther Valley, serving the school district in multiple capacities since 1977.She was hired as an elementary teacher in the school district. She advanced to principal of the school and then was promoted to superintendent of schools in 2007.Porembo retired from her post as the head of Panther Valley School District at the end of the school year in 2014.After the meeting, Porembo said that she was happy for the chance to give back to the community in which she lives."Once you retire, you kind of enjoy some time for yourself," she said. "You reflect on things you might have some skills in and see what you enjoy doing, and I always have been a history buff, somebody who enjoys how government works in the United States and in the communities."I would just like to work collaboratively to identify problems to make the community better," Porembo said. "I think we have an excellent community here and I am proud to be part of it. I would like to work with the people on this council to continue the good work they have been doing. I think it will fit my skill set also."In other matters, council voted to change the status of police officer Glenn Laninger to full-time.Laninger has been on his six-month probationary period but has been working full time in that capacity.Laninger is now the fourth full-time officer in the borough, which also has two part-time officers. He will be paid the salary agreed upon based on union contracts.Council brought up that members will be discussing the possibility of adding a fifth full-time officer to the force sometime this year. No further discussion or action was taken on this matter.
