Blizzard warning for entire region

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton and Schuylkill counties.

The warning, for heavy, blowing snow and gusty winds, is in effect until 3 a.m. Sunday.

The warning projects 10 to 20 inches of snow, with the highest amounts likely just south of I-80.

Snow will continue to be heavy at times through the day before tapering off late tonight.

The combination of heavy snowfall and strong winds will produce whiteout conditions and extremely dangerous travel.

Shoveling of heavy snow will be problematic for those with physical ailments.

Snow will cling to wires and trees, which could cause numerous power outages.

Roads will be impassable due to increasing snowfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour at times in heavier bands. Snow drifts up to five feet are possible.

Winds are expected to be northeast at 15 to 25 mph, with frequent gusts to 35 mph.

Temperatures are expected to be in the teens to low 20s, with poor visibility.

The Carbon County Commissioners have declared a snow disaster emergency for Carbon County travel is not restricted however any attempt to travel is extremely dangerous and is not advised.
