Polk Township supervisors will be naming a new board member to replace longtime supervisor Nancy C. May.

May, who has served the township for over 40 years, resigned Jan. 5. She served as supervisor and township secretary and treasurer."The work has been a long ride and I have enjoyed it," said May at a special meeting held on Jan. 14 to accept her resignation. "Helping others is who I am. I will rest for a while, but I will be back helping."May cited her health as the reason for her resignation, noting that in the past she has often put the township ahead of her family and her health and that the time has come for her to change that.The remaining supervisors, Chairman Brian Ahner and Vice Chairman Michael Hurley, are in the process of reviewing letters of interest from nine candidates looking to fill May's spot on the board."We have some very community-minded people interested in the position," Ahner said. "The difficulty will be in selecting one from the good group we have to choose from."Ahner did say they would like to select a person who is of the same party as May. Since the public voted for a Republican, the remaining supervisors feel they should honor that decision.Ahner also said if he and Hurley are not able to come to an agreement on a candidate, the township's vacancy board would be empowered to make the appointment.The following appointments were made to fill May's duties:Beverly Christman will serve as township treasurer.Ruthanne Toner will serve as township secretary.Gerald Zurat will serve as Right to Know officer.With the current staff in place, Ahner said he did not believe that the township would be hiring any new administrative personnel due to May's resignation."We will probably need to hire some temporary assistance during March and April when we issue the new recycling/dump permits," Ahner said."It is always a very busy time and you can't expect the administrative staff to do their regular duties and then to take on the added work of handling the permits as well."
