Lehighton pins Tamaqua

Lehighton head wrestling coach Danny Williams always wants his team to be ready to compete.

Regardless of the circumstances, Williams knows his Indians can't take any opponent - or match - for granted.Lehighton carried that mindset into Wednesday night's Schuylkill League Division I match against Tamaqua and walked away with a 61-12 victory.Despite getting five forfeits that gave the Indians 30 points, Williams wanted to make sure his squad made the most of the opportunity to get on the mat one more time before the Schuylkill League wrestling championships begin Friday."We knew that they didn't have a full lineup," the coach said, "so what I told my guys was to take this as your last live action before you get out to the league tournament. (I wanted them) to take it and utilize it as an opportunity to work on some things."You can't simulate the live action you get from a different opponent, especially when you're in the practice room wrestling the same guys. Just being able to get some live action with a different opponent is important, and with the league tournament being two days away, that was really big for us."The Indians (13-3, 2-1) set the tone early.Wyatt Clements started the night with what proved to be the most impressive victory of the contest, pinning the Blue Raiders Jin Choi in 12 seconds."Wyatt's really starting to figure it out," Williams said of Clements (15-3), who was ninth at 220 pounds in Off the Mat's most recent Class AA state rankings. "It's his second year of wrestling, and obviously he's shown that he's got the strength."But now he's really starting to get the skills down. He's starting to feel more comfortable on the mat. It's not an easy transition to this sport when it's not something you've been doing your whole life. He's really starting to now figure it out and he's looking good and taking care of business."In addition to Clements, Logan Pagotto (120), Chris Whiteman (132) and Dylan Schock (160) also won by fall, while Tyler Schock (138) won by major decision.Cody Scherer earned a hard fought 7-3 decision over Ty Hinkle at 152 pounds. The loss drops Tamaqua to 0-10, 0-3.With the grind of postseason wrestling right around the corner, Williams knows every victory counts, no matter how it comes."We're trying to get our guys to understand that their positioning in the district tournament is really important," he said, "so every win you can get, that's enough motivation for them right there. Every win you can get to get you a better seed is going to set you up for advancing in the postseason. And that's really what it's all about."CLOSING IN … Lehighton's Connor Frey will have a chance to capture more than just his second straight Schuylkill League gold medal this weekend. With his forfeit victory Wednesday night, the senior tied Derek Brownmiller's all-time wins record by notching his 123rd victory.FAMILIAR FACE … Another former Schuylkill League champion was in attendance Wednesday night.
