Volunteer firefighters from six municipalities were summoned to an explosion and fire that rocked a storage area of the Atlas Powder Company in Tamaqua R.3.

The detonation and resulting fire occurred in an isolated storage area and no employees were in the immediate area.Most fire department and ambulance personnel crews were not permitted to go onto Atlas property due to security precautions.Eric Leiby, Walker Township police chief, said the explosion happened a significant distance from any residences. No one was injured in the blast.
