Former interim Schuylkill County Clerk of Courts Paul Steffanic is back as interim first deputy clerk, and former county treasurer Jacqueline McGovern is now a judicial attendant.

The county salary board on Wednesday approved creating the position of interim first deputy clerk of courts, which pays $37,628 a year.Former first assistant District Attorney Maria T. Casey won the Clerk of Courts seat in the November general election. Before that, it was held by Thomas J. Campion Jr., who was appointed in October 2014 by then-Gov. Tom Corbett.Campion was appointed because former Clerk of Courts Stephen M. Lukach Jr. who held the office for 27 years, retired in April 2014 under a cloud of suspicion of fiscal wrongdoing. He has not been charged.Steffanic, who was Lukach's first deputy, became interim Clerk of Courts in the stretch between Lukach's retirement and Campion's appointment. Campion did not seek election to the office.Steffanic retired from the first deputy position in April; Janice Huth was hired in May as his replacement.Casey said Steffanic was the best choice for the job."He has a wealth knowledge. He was in that office for many years," she said. "I thought it was important to have continuity, and keep a person who had been a first deputy for a long period of time and knows all the processes and procedures."She said Steffanic approached her about being hired for the position."I think he'll be important in terms of training the next first deputy," Casey said.Steffanic, who had been hired as a judicial attendant shortly after retiring from the interim clerk's job, resigned from that post as of Monday.Casey said she is interviewing candidates for the first deputy position.The salary board also hired McGovern, who had retired at the end of December after 20 years as treasurer, as a judicial attendant at $9.95 an hour.Linda Marchalk of Tamaqua won the seat in the November general election.In other business, the board accepted the resignations of deputy coroners Diane Rhody, E. Franklin Griffiths, Wallace Hodgson and Christian Weiser.It appointed Natalie Ciccioni as deputy coroner. Deputy coroners are paid on a fee-for-service basis.The board also accepted the resignation of Central Booking per diem processing specialist James Whalen, and hired Joseph Smerko for the job at the same wage, $15 an hour.The board accepted the resignations of Children and Youth casework supervisor Kellie Potts, and judicial attendants Kathleen Casey and Beatrice Seltzer.It hired Ashley Lynn Weist as a secretary in Domestic Relations at $12.13 an hour, and accepted Victoria Lowthert as an unpaid intern in the Office of Senior Services.The board also reclassified conservation district program technician Christy Zulli from per diem to part-time at $15.19 an hour. There was no increase in her wages.
