Budget with no tax hike approved in Summit Hill

No tax increases will occur in Summit Hill under the 2016 budget which received final approval by the borough council Monday night.

The budget is based on 15.60 mills. Broken down, this includes 13.6 mills for general purposes, 1.5 mills for street lighting, and a half mill for fire protection.The fiscal package is balanced at $1,491,303.Revenue includes $700,000 from real estate tax, $14,000 from the occupational tax, $12,000 from the per capita tax, $16,000 from a real estate transfer tax, $225,500 from earned income tax, $1,800 from local services tax, and $52,000 from a cable TV franchise fee.Income is also derived from various permits, magistrate and state police fines, interest income, rental income from the Community Center, and $19,528 in royalties from cell tower rental fees.General fund expenses total $1,491,303.In other business• Council members Michael Alabovitz and Jesse Walck attended their final meetings. Both opted not to seek re-election when their terms expired at the end of 2015.Elected to succeed them are Karen Ruzicka and Dave Wargo.The council thanked the two outgoing council members for their service to the borough.• The reorganization meeting of the council will be held at 7 p.m. Monday. The regular monthly meeting of the council will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 25.• On a motion by Alabovitz, action was tabled on a four-year contract with the police department beginning in January. Alabovitz said he feels the new council should act on the matter. Tabling the motion was passed by a 5-2 vote. In favor of delaying the action were Alabovitz, Walck, John O'Gurek, Bill Chapman and Council President Mike Kokinda. Opposed were Billy O'Gurek and Gregory Kosciolek.• The council gave approval to the Hazleton YMCA/YWCA to hold its Anthracite Triathlon in Summit Hill beginning at 7 a.m. July 17.
