Woman flown from Mahoning crash scene

A 59-year-old woman was flown from the scene of a crash that happened at 10:45 p.m. Friday in Mahoning Township.

A Dodge Caravan was traveling eastbound along Route 443 near Spring House Road when the driver lost contol and the van rolled over several times, according to Lehighton State Police.

Two people were believed to have been transported, one of whom was believed to have been life-flighted. The woman was ejected through the windshield. Initial scanner reports indicated a third person was involved,

The woman was treated at the scene by members of the Mahoning Valley ambulance and Lehighton paramedics before being flown by Penn Star 5 to a Lehigh Valley trauma center.

Reports from the scene were that the woman was not wearing a seat belt. Another person was reported to be in the van.

Additional reports were the second vehicle involved in the incident fled the scene on Spring House road.

As first responders awaited the arrival of their police it was learned they had no officers on duty and would have to wait for an extended response by state police. The township recently made a decision to cut part=time police officers and to shift police to different shifts.

Lehighton State Police said there may have been another vehicle involved in the incident.

Assisting at the scene were West Penn Township Police and the Mahoning Valley Fire Department. The matter remains under investigation.
