Update: Effort woman killed in Route 209 crash

One person is dead following a multicar crash along Route 209 in Brodheadsville this morning.

Monroe County Coroner Bob Allen said Jeanette L. Ferrara, 46, of Effort, died in the crash at 5:36 a.m. today.

Allen said the initial crash occurred as the woman was driving her 2001 Chevy Cavalier northbound on Route 209 in Chestnuthill Township, in front of ESSA, when she crossed over into the southbound lane and struck a Waste Management garbage truck head-on. Brandon Boyington of Saylorsburg was the driver of the truck.

After impact, the Cavalier spun and was hit by a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Barbara Tokar of Effort.

The Cavalier went into a gully on the northbound side of the road, and Allen said Ferrara was ejected from the vehicle. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

Allen pronounced the woman dead at the scene at 6:24 a.m. A forensic autopsy will be performed Wednesday morning, he said.

Two other vehicles that were trying to avoid the initial crash were then involved in their own incident. Allen said a total of six vehicles were involved in two separate crashes, all as a result of the first crash.

State Police at Fern Ridge are investigating. Assisting at the scene were West End Fire Company and West End Ambulance.

Several other patients were taken to Pocono Medical Center.

Route 209 was closed for several hours.
