Machete-wielding woman gets prison term
A Carbon County woman was sentenced to a county prison term Monday for her part in a violent burglary.
Judge Joseph J. Matika sentenced Marisa Ann Becker, 26, of Lansford, to serve a total of nine to one day less 24 months in prison on a charge of aggravated assault, followed by one year probation. On a charge of theft she was placed on probation for a year, consecutive to the assault count. She previously pleaded to the charges. Charges of robbery, burglary, criminal conspiracy, simple assault and receiving stolen property were dropped in a plea bargain.Becker was charged for her part in a break-in that occurred at 4:36 a.m. June 19 at 16 W. Abbott St. Lansford police charged that Becker and Jacob Fischer, of Lehighton, entered the home of Robert Clifford III and assaulted him in his basement room. When officer Jason Helmer arrived on scene he found Clifford covered in blood and with visible injuries to his head, back, left arm and both hands.The investigation revealed Becker and Fischer entered the home and struck Clifford with a machete. When Clifford grabbed the machete away from Fischer, the defendant pulled it back, causing a deep cut to Clifford’s hands. When Clifford yelled for help from his parents, Becker and Fischer fled with the victim’s iPhone 4S.Becker told Matika she turned to drugs after a long-term relationship she had with a man, who fathered her son, ended abruptly. She said she began to use heroin and methamphetamine.She also said, “I want to let everyone know how sorry I am.”Matika said in reading a presentence investigation report prepared by the adult probation office, he was concerned that Becker’s family has a history of drug and alcohol problems. Matika told Becker she had better get her life back on track. He said, “Your life swirled out of control quickly.”Matika also ordered Becker to render 50 hours of community service, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance imposed on drug and alcohol use, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and probation, make restitution of $3,531.60, and have no contact with the victim.She was given credit for 160 days spent to date in jail on the charges.
