Bulldog matmen face a tough task to fill lineup

Steve Hluschak Jr. has his work cut out for him this season.

A year after only losing one wrestler from his Northern Lehigh wrestling program, the third year coach finds himself in a position in which he is now without the presence of seven wrestlers. Thus, it makes it a much tougher task to fill a complete lineup. With the loss of a single wrestler a year ago, and thanks pretty much to a constant full lineup, the Bulldogs had no problem running the table to make one memorable seasons for themselves. They ended up finishing as Colonial League runners-up and had raised a district championship trophy last season. This season, Hluschak has some concerns if there is any thought of possibly making it another memorable year, especially with plenty of voids present in his lineup at the current moment.Instead, the Bulldogs' mentor has decided to simply focus on the task at hand rather than the possibilities of those kind of accolades this season."Last year's over with," Hluschak said. "This year is another year. This is a new team. We got to set out to prove ourselves and create our own identity."If we can continue to get better every day, every match, that's what we're looking for instead."And, it's no wonder why Hluschak and his coaching staff are taking in that kind of mentality since they have some responsibilities of putting some pieces of the puzzle together with this year's lineup. With the loss of Nate Farber (160), Austin Arnold (170) and Stephen Scheib (195) to graduation, and several wrestlers out with football injuries right now, Hluschak has a tough challenge ahead of him with the season lurking right around the corner."With guys out with injuries and some graduating, it's a challenge simply to fill a lineup with a AA program," Hluschak said. "So, it's going to hurt. We're going to have to fill those spots with the talent we got, but hopefully, those guys step up."But, we're going to take in that 'Next man up' kind of mentality."The task may be a bit easier than one may think for Hluschak and his coaching staff since they already have some seasoned wrestlers returning back to the wrestling room, who will help spread some seasoned talent across the board. District champions Colton Rex (120), Matthew Schmall (138) and Ryan Farber (160) as well as Cameron Kates (285), who wasn't too far away from a title himself finishing third at districts, bring back some top-notch talent to the Bulldogs' lineup.Seth Fronheiser (113), Ezra Neff (126), Brandon Belfonti (145) and Jason Schaffer (220) bring forth plenty of varsity minutes on the mat themselves, dding more experienced talent to build around. And, that's Hluschak's intention. Build around that core of quality, talented wrestlers returning, who are definitely looking to make noise for another year on the mat.If all the pieces fall into place with filling those voids, the Bulldogs may not have a problem working on the task that Hluschak has set forth for them.Hluschak doesn't have too high of expectations laid out for his grapplers simply because he considers this a 'new' team, but wants this pack of Bulldogs to continue working hard in the weight room and take it forth straight into action this season."We want to be competitive every match," Hluschak said. "We want to get better every single day. We want to go out there and wrestle for six minutes. If our kids work hard for us, or work together, we will get better every day."If they do that, and listen to what we're saying, we will be happy."After that, whatever happens, happens. And, we will be happy with the fact that they're getting better."
