The Slatington Fire Department will partner with Lehigh Valley's nonprofit District Youth Center program to provide free smoke detectors to the community.

Fire Chief Keith Weaver said a similar program had been discussed years ago but issues with liability put a stop to the start up.For the revamped program the fire department along with two or three members of the DYC would install up to three detectors per residence."It helps make the community safer and gets the fire department out mixing with the residents," Weaver said.Slatington residents will have to sign a waiver with clearly written language, "If it worked when we left and you take the batteries out, it's not our fault," the chief said.Double-sided tape will be used in residences to avoid unnecessary drilling in the dwelling. Disability, age and income will be factored in to determine if residents qualify for the free equipment. The crew will also check already installed detectors and replace batteries if needed.Justin Grimshaw, head of the DYC, told the borough council during the monthly meeting that the organization contacted Slatington to extend the program and "try to engage and reach out to our neighboring communities."
