No. Dame of Green Pond ousts N'western

Notre Dame coach Sue Aquilina left her team with some very simple instructions before they broke the huddle to begin overtime.

Katie Hohl made Aquilina's words look prophetic.Hohl lofted a 45-yard bomb into the back of the net late in the second overtime period to give Notre Dame a dramatic 2-1 victory over Northwestern in a District 11 Class AA girls soccer semifinal game on Tuesday at Northern Lehigh High School."I told them at the start of overtime to just take shots," said Aquilina. "It didn't matter if they were pretty shots or ugly shots, I just wanted them to shoot. Because you never know when one of those shots will turn into a goal."After more than 28 minutes of sudden death, the Crusaders' ninth shot of overtime finally found the mark.Hohl's game-winner came when she ran into an attempted Northwestern clearing pass and rocketed the ball over the head of goalie Amey McKenna just 1:55 before the teams would have turned to penalty kicks."I was open so I just tried to strike the ball with all my might - and then I just prayed it went in," said Hohl, who explained she had just "a couple" of goals during the regular season. "I play center-mid so I don't score much. I mostly distribute the ball. This was definitely the biggest goal I ever scored. It was one of those high school moments that I'll always remember."For Northwestern, it was one of those moments that they would like to forget."It was an unfortunate goal," said Northwestern coach Kelly Bleam. "You hate to have a game like this end with that type of goal. You would much rather it be a goal off a nice set up instead of a long, lobbing ball from midfield."But give Notre Dame credit. They played a strong second half and kept the pressure on us in overtime."Northwestern grabbed a 1-0 lead on an Abby Chisdak goal with 38:24 still left in the first half. The Tigers outshot Notre Dame 7-2 in the opening half and had all the best scoring opportunities, but couldn't open up more breathing room."I thought we controlled play in the first half and had several chances to extend our early lead," said Bleam. "But we had some near misses and didn't take advantage of a lot of good scoring opportunities."Often times that comes back to haunt you and that's what happened to us tonight."Notre Dame (13-6) finally tied the game at 1-1 when freshman standout Mikayla Bates blasted a shot home from 20 yards out with 14:07 remaining in the game. That goal eventually forced OT and set the stage for Hohl's heroics. After losing the nucleus of their back-to-back district championships teams, the Tigers (13-5) had a season no one expected. Northwestern reached the Colonial League title game and then came within minutes of possibly going to the district championship game as well."I told our girls that success can't always be measured with gold medals and be based on championships," said Bleam. "Sometimes success is about overachieving and going beyond what is expected."That's what this team did and that's why this season was so successful."STRONG FINISH ... Notre Dame had as many shots in the 28 minutes of overtime (nine) as it did in the previous 80 minutes of regulation.STAT STUFF ... Northwestern finished with a 19-18 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corners.EXTRA TIME ... Both the Tigers, who beat Allentown Central Catholic in penalty kicks, and the Crusaders, who edged top-seeded Blue Mountain on a sudden death goal by Bates, also played overtime in their D-11 quarterfinal games.SAYING GOODBYE ... Bleam credited seniors McKenzi Divers, Haley Hebelka, Taylor Slack and Lyduia Danner for the success the Tigers enjoyed this season. "I'm so proud of them," she said. "They are basically being held together with tape and glue, but they kept battling and giving everything they had. They were tremendous examples for all the underclassmen we had on the team."
