First woman elected as DA

Jean A. Engler is the first woman elected as district attorney in Carbon County.

Engler, a Democrat, defeated Adam Weaver, a Republican, during Tuesday's general election to secure her first full term as the county's lead prosecutor. Engler garnered 6,226 votes; while Weaver received 5,415."I'm so happy, so relieved and gratified that the voters of Carbon County returned me to the job I love," Engler said Tuesday night surrounded by family and friends at Macaluso's in Nesquehoning. "Thanks to all of my family and friends that worked so hard in the last several months."Engler has been serving in the capacity of district attorney since Aug. 29, 2014, after longtime District Attorney Gary F. Dobias retired from his post.Before that, she served in the capacity of first assistant district attorney since January 2014, and as an assistant district attorney since 1989.Engler is a lifelong resident of Carbon County, living in Jim Thorpe.She is the daughter of the late attorney W. Joseph and Mary Engler and has four siblings, John, attorneys Joseph and Jane, and Joan.She is a graduate of Marian Catholic High School; Villanova University and Villanova University School of Law.Over the years, she has prosecuted hundreds of criminal cases, has been an active member in the community and was chancellor of the Carbon County Bar Association in 2009.- Bob Ford contributed to this report
