A Carbon County man entered guilty pleas in 6 pending criminal cases on Monday in the county court.
Zachiry D. Kerschner, 21, of Lehighton, entered the pleas before Judge Steven R. Serfass and faces a state prison term at the time of sentencing.Kerschner entered pleas to two counts each of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, criminal trespass, theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal mischief and one count of receiving stolen property. He was charged by Mahoning Township and state police at Lehighton for incidents dating back to 2013 and into 2015. He was charged with entering homes in the township, stealing drugs and removing items and then selling them to feed a drug habit.Several of the counts he pleaded to are felonies, some of misdemeanors and the mischief counts or summaries.Defense Attorney Matthew Rapa said Kerschner, who has been in the county prison on the charges unable to post bail, will apply for placement in the state's Intermediate Punishment Program. The program runs for about 2 years with about half of it spent in a state prison, the remainder in an intensive inpatient drug rehabilitation program and finally at a halfway house. However, if he is admitted but fails to complete it, Kerschner would be brought back before Serfass for resentencing.Serfass signed an order transferring Kerschner from the county prison to the state system so he can be evaluated for the IPP program. After the state determines if he is eligible he will be brought back before Serfass for formal sentencing.
