From sweet to scary, Jim Thorpe parade satisfies

Candy was not in short supply Sunday afternoon as ghostly figures filled the streets of Jim Thorpe for the town's 21st annual Halloween parade.

Carbon County treasurer Ron Sheehan led the parade to the starting line near Jim Thorpe High School as the 2015 grand marshal.Sheehan, 50, is a 28-year member of the Jim Thorpe Lions Club and also a founder of the Carbon County St. Patrick's Day parade.According to Jim Thorpe Lions Club parade committee chairman Jim Trainer, over 300 people, nearly 60 vehicles and seven floats participated in the parade. That group included "Cabbage Patch" Girl Scouts, the "Monsters" of Troop 30137, Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank pirates and Scooby-Doo.So convincing was the JTNB pirate float that it took home first place honors in that division, followed by Troop 30137.First place in the group division went to Cub Pack 138 followed by Daisy Troop 30423."I saw them setting up and my eyes immediately went to that float," said Tim Bruster, who was watching near the high school.Among those hoping to scoop up the candy lining the streets was David Ramsey, 7, of Penn Forest Township, who was standing near his cousin's residence."It's a lot of fun," he said. "Everyone is really nice and throws us lots of candy."It was the same sense of enjoyment for Josephine King, 35, who watched her 4-year-old daughter take in the sights and sounds of the parade."Everyone always has a lot of fun," she said. "It's nice to see the streets full. The kids have a great time. It gets them in the mood for trick-or-treating."As usual, Santa and Mrs. Claus brought the parade to a close, signaling that the holiday season is just around the corner.Jim Thorpe announced its house decorating contest winners on Friday.Joseph Montesrin won most original, Lori Leinhard had the creepiest display, Darlene Sterling had the scariest setup and Thomas Gavornik took home the best theme honor. All winners got a gift certificate to the Jim Thorpe Market.
