Yard sale, craft festival will benefit 150th celebration

A yard sale, along with a Heritage Trade and Craft Fest, will be held in Lehighton to raise funds for its sesquicentennial next year.

The Lehighton 150 Celebration Committee has a day full of fundraising events coming up next weekend, according to Autumn Abelovsky, secretary of the committee.Abelovsky said the yard sale will be held in the Community Grove, Eighth and Iron streets, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.People wishing to sell items may rent a 10-by-20-foot area for $10. Registration and setup will be from 7-9 a.m.There will be many people on hand to sell their used items, as well as vendors for Avon, Scentsy, Tupperware and more, Abelovsky said.Anyone who wishes to reserve a space may contact Abelovsky at 610-730-0041, or

AutumnA13@aol.com.Also that day, from noon to 4 p.m. the committee will also hold a Heritage Trade and Craft Fest in the Recreation Center, 243 S. Eighth St.There is a $5 cost for the Heritage Fest per child, and adults may enter for free. There will be a refreshment stand available for purchases.At this event, Abelovsky said kids can partake in visual demonstrations, as well as hands-on experiences, to learn how people lived years ago.She said some of the stations that will be available are wood carving, quilting, old-time music, crocheting, farm tools, weaving, spinning, soap making, clothes washing, hoop and stick rolling games, and more.In addition, kids will also have an opportunity to make a hand print quilt patch to be sewn into the youth Sesquicentennial Quilt that will be placed in the time capsule at the celebration next summer.Abelovsky said the committee has changed its goal to raise $80,000 for an eight-day celebration to commemorate the 150 years of the borough.The festivities are scheduled for June 25-July 2, 2016.
