Nursing home residents honored

A group of residents from a Pottsville nursing home accepted honors Wednesday from Schuylkill County commissioners.

The four women were lauded for their efforts to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. They are Ruth Puches, 95; Anne Sabadish, 89; Ruth Sheeler, 78; and Blanche Sabol, 80.Each received a copy of the proclamation read by Commissioners' Chairman Frank J. Staudenmeier. The proclamation designates Saturday as "Make a Difference Day" in the county."Sharing with others and working together through volunteer service can help solve serious social problems and bridge differences that separate people," the proclamation states. It's the 20th year Schuylkill has participated in the national day of service, said Janice Johnston, director of Community Volunteers in Action."For the past two decades, local families, service groups, clubs, organizations, businesses, churches, hospitals, banks and other enthusiastic entities have been helping to improve the quality of life in Schuylkill County," she said. "They've battled against hunger, domestic violence, substance abuse, illiteracy, loneliness, fear, illness and other negative influences in their communities. To date, over 2,200 projects were completed, with an average of 6,000 participants annually."The four women, from Golden Living York Terrace, represent Pennsylvania's Empowered Expert Residents. PEERs are residents who are trained to self-advocate and empower their fellow residents to improve their quality of life and quality of care in long-term care facilities.Eileen Barlow, ombudsman for Schuylkill County, said the woman raised about $500 for the Wounded Warrior Project in memory of the late Lance Cpl. Fred Davis, U.S. Marine Corps and a fellow PEER.Davis, 33, was severely injured during his second tour of duty in Afghanistan."As a result of his second tour, he was injured to the point where he had to be admitted to one of our local nursing homes," Barlow said. "He was a vibrant young man who was injured in an accident on his way to a doctor's appointment."The injury led to Davis' death in September 2014, she said.
