Hurricanes stun Blue Raiders in overtime

It wasn't surprising that last night's game between Tamaqua and Schuylkill Haven went to overtime.

What was surprising, however, was the turn of events late in the fourth quarter and in OT that resulted in the Hurricanes' 27-21 victory over the Raiders. With the score tied at 21, Haven got the ball on its own 35 yard line with 3:22 to play in the fourth. Having struck on two big pass plays earlier, the Hurricanes played conservatively, ending up with a fourth-and-five before punting the ball to Tamaqua. With a first down, 47 seconds left in regulation and the ball on their own 35, Raider quarterback Thad Zuber took a knee to let time run out to force overtime.Haven coach Mike Farr won the OT coin toss and deferred, giving Tamaqua first shot at scoring from the 10 yard line."This is the third time we've played Tamaqua in overtime," he said. "My strategy is to play defense first so we can decide what to do when we get the ball. If our defense held, we have a great kicker in Dawson Evitts so we could win it with a field goal."The Raiders, who gave the ball to senior running back Bud Moyer 27 times in which he ran for 98 yards and three touchdowns in the game, ran a first down pass play into the right corner of the end zone, but it was intercepted by Haven's Danny Lozada."We knew they were going to load up on Moyer, so we tried to catch them off guard," said Raider coach Sam Bonner. "Our receiver was open, but Lozada made a hell of a play."With the turnover, Haven started at the 10, but instead of immediately trying for the field goal, Lozada handed off to Nick Kerschner, who bolted off left tackle into the end zone for the winning score."We were all set to kick, but Nick came up to me and said, 'Give me the rock coach, I'll get it in.'"In the first quarter, Tamaqua had trouble sustaining drives, but finally got to the Haven five yard line, yet fumbled the ball away into the end zone. Then in the second quarter, the Hurricanes (3-1) drove 80 yards in 12 plays to take a 7-0 lead on an 18-yard quarterback draw off the option by Lozada. The Raiders tallied the tying touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter with Moyer running the ball six consecutive times, scoring from three yards out.The teams would trade scores until Moyer broke tackles off the left side and scampered for a 39-yard TD with 3:27 to go. Haven stopped Moyer on the two point conversion run, but a face mask penalty followed by an offside call against Haven put the ball a the six inch line where Moyer punched it in to tie the score."After a slow start, we bounced back and certainly had our chances to win," said Bonner. "Dropped passes and not cashing in on opportunities really hurt us. We're not a very athletic team so we need to grind it out and finish long drives."Field position advantage? ... One would think so when the Raiders began three first half drives at the Haven 47, 46, and 28 yard lines, but they ended with two punts and a fumble.Key catch. ... The big play that set up Moyer's six carries in a row for a TD was a 26-yard pass from Zuber to junior Daylon Barron which gave Tamaqua a first down at the Haven 33 yard line.Much more for number 34. ... Moyer carried the ball 27 times for Tamaqua. The rest of the Raider backfield totaled six carries for only 11 yards.Perfect storm. ... The Hurricanes needed just two plays in overtime to win, an interception followed by a 10 yard TD run.
