Playoff Colts ... new Marks ... Wood goes wild

Every Friday during the fall sports season, the TIMES NEWS will publish its annual fall sports notebook reflecting back on the week that was, and highlighting both individual and team accomplishments, as well as interesting information that may have occurred in games, matches or meets. The weekly notebook will cover cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, tennis and volleyball, and will consist of storylines from the previous seven days. Today's notebook will reflect back on all the happenings from last Wednesday up through this past Tuesday. After finishing tied with Lourdes Regional atop the Division II standings with identical 9-1 records, the Marian golf team will try for a Schuylkill League championship next Wednesday when they take to the mountain course at Mountain Valley Golf Course in Barnesville. There they will compete with three other teams (Division I champion Blue Mountain, Division I runner-up Pottsville and Lourdes Regional) for the overall team championship. The boys and girls individual League championship meets will take place on Monday afternoon at Hidden Valley Golf Course.CROSS COUNTRYSISTER ACT ... Last year, Tina Capparell made a name for herself by winning a League championship, a District championship and a State medal as only a freshman. This season, Tina's younger sister Nicole is following right in her older sibling's footsteps. The Marian duo has been nothing but "double trouble" this season for area cross country teams, as the sisters finished in first (Tina - 21:03) and second (Nicole - 21:58) place respectively in last Wednesday's tri-meet against Schuylkill Haven and Lehighton.SMASHING RECORDS ... When Tamaqua traveled to Minersville last Wednesday, little did the Blue Raiders know that they'd be bringing home two course records with them. Adam Melnick tied the boys course record at Minersville with a winning time of 18:36, while Monika Shimko broke the Minersville girls course record in a time of 21:54.FIELD HOCKEYTURNING THE PAGE ... Last Thursday, Northwestern and Northern Lehigh battled to a 1-1 Colonial League tie, but it was Courtney Page's first-half goal that marked the first Northwestern goal scored against the Bulldogs since September 9, 2011. Page's goal ended Northern Lehigh's six-game Colonial League shutout streak over the Tigers. In the span of those three seasons, Northern Lehigh outscored Northwestern 28-0. The Tigers have not beaten the Bulldogs since a 2-1 victory on October 6, 2010. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie in 2011.SOCCERLUCKY NUMBER 13 ... On Friday afternoon, the Pleasant Valley girls soccer team scored 12 first-half goals, en route to a 13-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Dieruff. The 13 goals were the most goals scored by a TIMES NEWS area team in any sport this season. The previous high mark for goals in a game was set by the Lehighton field hockey team on September 12, when they defeated East Stroudsburg North by a score of 12-0.LEAVING HIS MARK(S) ... Joe Marks scored two goals against Bangor (a 9-1 Indians victory) on Saturday morning, which set a new Lehighton school record for career goals. Marks added four more goals to his total in Monday's 10-0 victory over North Schuylkill. Entering Wednesday's game against Jim Thorpe, Marks currently sits at 47 goals, six more than the previous school record of 41 set by Anthony Rossino.WILD WOOD ... It was quite a week for Palmerton's Monica Wood, as the Bombers senior scored six goals in Thursday's 9-0 Colonial League route of Pen Argyl. The six goals in a game were the most by any individual player in the TIMES NEWS area this season (in any sport). However, Wood wasn't done, as she scored four goals against Catasauqua on Wednesday and two goals against Bangor on Tuesday. In just three games this week, Wood accounted for 12 goals, which was 75-percent of Palmerton's goals (16) for the week.SILLY RABBIT, TRICKS ARE FOR KIDS ... In the first 12 days of the season, there were nine "hat tricks" tallied by TIMES NEWS area players. In the past seven days alone, there were 11 hat tricks recorded. Palmerton's Monica Wood had two hat tricks during the past week (six goals and four goals), while the Lehighton tandem of Joe Marks and Rajah Quinones tallied four goals apiece on back-to-back days (Monday and Tuesday). Scoring three goals in a game this past week were Northwestern's JD Haaf, Abigail Chisdak and Courtney Page, Jim Thorpe's Cody Geiser and Autumn Cope, Northern Lehigh's Dan Belfonti, and Tamaqua's Emma Pester.
