Nolehi manhandles Wilson
Despite holding a 25-point lead, Northern Lehigh head coach Joe Tout wasn't happy with the play of his team in the first half on Friday night.
A couple of fumbles kept the Bulldogs from putting the game under the "Mercy Rule" in the first half.It didn't take long for the Bulldogs to take control after the break, however, and they came away with a 39-7 Colonial League win over the Warriors."As coaches we knew Wilson was real young," Tout said. "We weren't real happy with our kids at halftime. We didn't have to yell or scream at them or anything of that nature, but we were sloppy."We turned the ball over deep in our territory. Then we turned the ball over after we had forced a turnover. We told the kids at halftime that we were fortunate to be up by 25 points. It wasn't what we expected. We expected our kids to come out and do what they had to do."But I'll give our kids credit. We came out in the second half and did what we had to do. We also got to play a lot of our young kids tonight so that was good."It was a big night offensively for Northern Lehigh's C.J. Young. The Bulldog senior scored on a six-yard run with 6:57 left in the first quarter. With 2:43 left in the first half, he ran 29 yards for his second TD. To put the icing on the cake, Young took the handoff on a fourth-and-three and went 52 yards for his third score of the night lifting Northern Lehigh to a 32-0 lead.Add to that a solid defensive night, and Young left his mark on the field."He is so valuable for us defensively," Tout added. "He really is. He reads the quarterback, he doesn't get fooled, he fills the hole. Normally you don't like your safety making so many tackles, but he knows when they are throwing and when they are running. He really did some nice things for us tonight."The Bulldogs were a little nicked up after last week's loss to Saucon Valley, but got out of this one a lot healthier.WHO TAKES THE SNAP ... The Bulldogs have a bit of a luxury right now as they started the game with McNair taking the snaps and he worked on getting the running game on track. Faced with a fourth-and-one on their first offensive series, McNair busted loose right up the middle and raced 66 yards for his team's first score. On their first drive of the second quarter, it was Chad Cederberg showing that the Bulldogs can pass when he hit Brandon Smith on the run for a 61-yard TD strike. "That's kind of where we are headed right now," said Tout. "Taz does some really nice things at quarterback, but we also like him at tailback. C.J. had that great TD pass. As the season goes on, we're finding out the identity of our players."KEEP THE CLOCK RUNNING ... The Bulldogs had the win in the playoffs against Pine Grove when they sent the game under the "Mercy Rule" and got the win, but it's been a while since they did it in a regular season game. With 6:23 still left in the third quarter, McNair picked off a Mike Glovas pass and took it to the house from 48 yards out to give the Bulldogs a 39-0 advantage.TURNOVER CITY ... It wasn't a good night for the Warriors as the Bulldogs intercepted three passes and also recovered three of five Wilson fumbles. The Bulldogs fumbled three times, losing two of them.
