CCTI students building another home

For the second straight year, Carbon Career and Technical Institute students are building a modular home for only the cost of materials.

Jeff Hazelton, an instructional aide with CCTI's carpentry program, told the school's joint operating committee Thursday night that the project is moving full speed ahead and providing an incredible hands-on experience for students."We have finished the interior and exterior walls," Hazelton said of the 14-by-40-foot single-wide home. "The plan is to start the rafters tomorrow. The kids really enjoy it. Drafting students drew up the prints. We build it right on the trailer and deliver it to the customer."This particular home is going to the Lake Hauto community, CCTI Executive Director Dave Reinbold said. The homes are so popular that six future customers are on a waiting list. The home will be lifted off the trailer with a crane and set on the foundation.Emily Clements, a carpentry student, said the experience is one of a kind."I came into this and I couldn't even hold a drill," she said. "Everything I learned about carpentry has come through this project. It's the best thing I've experienced here at CCTI."The home is built to the customer's specifications. Students will also put electric and bathroom fixtures in the home, if asked."It's the owners responsibility for water hookups and things like that, but the students do a great job with just about every other part of this project. It's an invaluable experience for them,"In other news from Thursday's joint operating committee meeting, the board:• Accepted the resignation of Alice Berger, health and physical education teacher.• Approved Terri-Jean Walck as a substitute instructional aide and clerical personnel.• Approved Eric Bott, Jeff Hazelton, Joseph Bouffard, Wilmer Redline, Kristopher Rodgers and John Rogers as a substitute custodian, groundskeeper and cleaner.• Appointed Alyssa Duksta as a part-time reading instructor at $30 per hour.• Approved Franklin Klock as a chaperone on an as-needed basis.• Approved William Stoudt as the DECA assistant adviser.• Accepted the resignation of Donald Kerbaugh III, carpentry instructor.• Appointed Donald McGorry as instructional aide in auto collision repair at a prorated $13,125 salary.• Approved JoLynn Gazo as a substitute teacher, instructional aide and clerical worker.
