Palmerton 'D' comes up big

With 1:47 left in the game and Pen Argyl making one last attempt to force overtime, Zach Buck eliminated any possibilities of that happening.

The Palmerton defensive back leaped mid-air and poked at Green Knight quarterback Logan Ruppert's pass attempt. He got enough of his fingertips on it, was able to tap it up in the air, and then brought the ball down for an interception.Buck returned it 19 yards and it wound up being the exclamation point on a strong defensive effort by the Bombers in the final quarter, and they walked away with a 28-20 Colonial League victory."There's nothing like making the big play like that at the end of the game," said Buck, who also had the game's initial offensive reception. "If we wouldn't have got ourselves in the situation where it was a close game, it might not have been as big a play."After Pen Argyl made it pretty much a whole new game moving within one with 3:44 left in the third quarter, the Bombers' defense was forced to step it up.The Palmerton offense did answer back, giving it some breathing room scoring on their very next drive. Mike Stasko was responsible for the insurance score with his third touchdown. The Bombers stopped the Green Knights twice in the fourth quarter. Pen Argyl forced the Bombers into a turnover on downs and then their only punt of the game. The Palmerton defense stole the spotlight reel in the final 2:22.Before that, on the Green Knights' second last drive, the Bombers forced a three-and-out thanks to Jared Mooney stopping Logan Sterner for a two-yard loss, and Calvin Koch sacked Jake Holden for a nine-yard loss.It got better during Pen Argyl's final offensive series. Two plays before Buck's heroics, Joe Bradberry recorded another Bomber sack, dropping Ruppert for a seven-yard loss. Pen Argyl called a timeout to try to draw up one last attempt, but Buck ruined that idea with his interception and sealed the deal."Our defense rose to the occasion today," Palmerton coach Chris Walkowiak said. "We gave them the ball deep in our territory. They ended up scoring there. But, for most of the second half, we settled down defensively. Our mentality definitely changed in the final minutes."REDEMPTION ... Taschler showed he meant business as he made all four of his extra point attempts against Pen Argyl. That was after missing two opportunities and losing the placekicker responsibilities to Perschy last week against Wilson. "That was the difference in the game putting those four extra points through," stressed Walkowiak, of Taschler's accomplishment against PA. "We talk about being resilient, facing adversity, getting down and putting your last week's performance behind you whether it was good or bad, and Jake responded."COMES IN THREES ... After scoring three touchdowns (two on the ground, one through the air) last week, Stasko adds another touchdown hat-trick to his efforts this early in the season. But, this week, they all came on the ground. Ironically, the three touchdowns came on carries from one-yard, two-yard and three-yards.NO OPENING KICKOFF RETURN THIS WEEK ... In efforts to prevent any chance of the Bombers' Toby Sander, or Mike Stasko for that matter, of returning another opening kick-off for a touchdown, Pen Argyl elected to pooch kick the ball so it didn't quite make it to either one of the return guys. Unfortunately for the Green Knights, it bounced out of bounds giving the Bombers the ball at their own 35-yard line anyway.
