Weissport festival fills holiday weekend with redneck fun
Weissport has a hot new couple, Mr. Redneck and Miss Daisy Duke.
The Redneck Festival was held in the Weissport Park over the course of three days with many different contests, but the most popular took place Saturday night, where Mr. Redneck was crowned and Miss Daisy Duke was sashed. The winner from each category won the title and a $50 cash award. The Redneck Festival started in 2008 by the Weissport Recreation Committee as a way to raise funds to spruce up the Weissport Park in the center of town and to cover the cost to overhaul the playground.Well-received bands played in the gazebo throughout the weekend, including crowd favorite Banned From the Ranch, who covered everything from George Jones to David Allen Coe.Pennsylvania Dutch Kitchen sold freshly fried funnel cakes and Sis's BBQ served up tasty fare for the festival. The small park was packed with an enthusiastic crowd all weekend from families to teenagers to middle-aged couples just looking to get out of the house without the kids for a few hours. Skee-Ball and BB gun shootout game booths lined one side of the park while craft vendors took to the far end.Contests included the usual hot wing eating contest and a watermelon-eating contest. A redneck-style chariot race where a two-man team created a specially fabricated toilet on wheels to navigate through the course. All contests required participants to be 18 years old and pay an entry fee.Mr. Redneck stole the contest spotlight however, where six men, including two former winners, lined up to be judged by crowd applause. The 2013 title winner Scott Daniels of Lehighton wore shorter shorts than the Daisy Duke contestants, hoping to gain favor. Last year's winner Werner "Hoss" Fornos of Nazareth competed for his second year."I tried to live up to the title," he said. "It's all in great fun and raising money for a good cause. It's very tongue in cheek," he said before the contest started. He did his constituents proud and took home the Burger King crown. The Miss Daisy Duke contestants took over the stage next. "Bubba" Duane Dellecker, a Weissport Recreation Committee member and emcee for the event, said the Mr. Redneck contests had to go first in order to keep the men in the crowd hanging around. Five women from 18 to mid-40s lined up on stage to compete for the denim sash.Former winner Chelsea Strubeck threw her straw hat into the ring to compete again. She was ousted by newcomer Marisa Swingle, 18, of Easton. The applause was too close to call by the five judges so a decibel meter was brought to make sure the correct winner was selected. The festival raged on into Sunday, concluding with a Best Rack contest. All funds raised will be put back into the committee to be used for future projects.
