NY couple injured in fatal Penn Forest crash speak out
Gail and Verner Drohan of Fulton, New York were visiting relatives in Jim Thorpe on Aug. 20 when they were involved in a violent crash that resulted in the deaths of two teenage girls from Albrightsville, Penn Forest Township and sent four other teens to the hospital.
Jasmine Fonseca, 15, and Taylor Shepherdson, 16, died at the scene, while Tegan Kane, the driver of the vehicle in which the teens were riding, suffered minor injuries. Kane's brother, Korben, remains in critical condition at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital. The boy's cousin Michael Thorpe of Teterboro, New Jersey, remains in the hospital as well, having undergone extensive facial surgery.Another cousin, Taylor Schmidt of Lehighton, was also injured, his condition is unknown.Gail Drohan was transported from the scene to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest Campus. Drohan was treated for a broken sternum, bruises on both knees, broken toes on her left foot, a broken finger on her right hand, bruised lung and a broken vertebra at L1-L2.Drohan previously had two knee replacements and has to see her orthopedist next week because she is having a considerable amount of pain in her right knee.Drohan's husband, Verner, was much luckier, having walked away with sore knees, feet and a bruised chest."We were driving a brand new Buick Enclave, only a month old," said Gail Drohan. "It has so many safety features; I don't think we would be here without them. The On-Star even called in the crash before we realized what was going on."The Drohans are saddened by the turn of events and sent their best wishes to the families of those lost and hurt in the crash."We spoke with the investigating officer, Trooper Bailey, on Wednesday and he told us one of the boy is still in the hospital," said Drohan. "We feel so bad for all the families involved. But we are grateful that people are also concerned about us."The Drohans say they are very grateful to Roseann Lesher, general manager of the Country Inn and Suites in Lehighton."Roseann immediately sent flowers to my wife in the hospital, she took care of everything that she could for me, she extended my stay and gave my brother a room when he came to stay we me," said Drohan."I am so grateful; she made it easier for me to make my wife my priority."Drohan spent three days in the hospital. Her husband picked her up Sunday and they returned home to New York where she is recuperating.
