A Carbon County woman admitted bringing drugs into the county prison and sharing it with fellow inmates.
She was one of five defendants in pending drug-related cases entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Tuesday.Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted pleas from the following:Tiffany Jane Scott, 27, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of contraband into a prison.She was arrested by Nesquehoning police on March 3 when they were called to the county prison by corrections officers. Police said Scott had brought heroin into the prison and had given some to other female inmates. The incident came to light when corrections officers noticed some of the female inmate acting strangely. She was given a blood test which showed the presence of morphine and suboxone.Matika noted sentencing guidelines indicate a state prison term be imposed. He deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.Megan M. Yarnell, 28, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance-heroin.She was arrested on June 3 at Ridge and Springgarden sts., by Lansford police. Police responded to a report of a assault incident. Yarnell was one of the people at the scene. While being taken into custody, police found two bags of heroin on her.Matika placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, and render 50 hours of community service.Salvatore James Azzaro, 21, of Weatherly, pleaded to one count each of possession of a small amount of marijuana and resisting arrest.He was arrested on July 26 along Main Street by Weatherly police. Police responded to the area for a reported drug transaction. Azzaro was walking along the street and was told to stop by police. He continued to walk and had to be forcibly taken into custody.Matika placed him on probation for a year on the resisting charge and ordered him to get a D&A evaluation and render 50 hours of community service. On the drug count he was fined $100.Nikki Bertolette, 25, of Freeland, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.She was arrested on Nov. 15, 2014, following an incident along Route 93. Nesquehoning police responded to a accident and found a vehicle in a ditch. Bertolette was a passenger in the vehicle. Found in the vehicle where she was seated and on her person were packets of heroin and smoking devices.Matika placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to get a D&A evaluation, zero tolerance for D&A use, and render 50 hours of community service.David A. Penberth, 45, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.He was arrested on May 28 at 317 E. Abbott St., by Lansford police. Police responded to the scene and found him in possession of paraphernalia.He was placed on probation for six months and ordered to render 50 hours of community service.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000, and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
