Rates may be raised for using community center

Because of slovenly acts by patrons, the fee for renting out the Summit Hill Community Center is likely to be raised.

Kira Steber, secretary-treasurer for Summit Hill borough, also is in charge of opening and closing the community center for special events held there. She said it is rented just about every weekend. She said because of the increased demand for using the facility, the borough has to consider to either pay her for these services "or hire somebody to run the place."She said often she has to open and close the community center Friday nights, Saturday nights, and Sundays. In addition, she also has to do impromptu clean-up work. She told the council on one occasion, there was an event on a Saturday night and another scheduled on a Sunday afternoon. When she checked the facility on the Sunday morning, it was a mess. There were cup cakes squashed on the tables, salad dressing was dragged across the parking lot from a torn garbage bag and other slovenly conditions prevailed."I don't think it's fair to me anymore," she told council.Steber said the borough has an individual who does cleaning on a part-time basis, but doesn't feel it is fair to put that person on stand-by status on weekends.Councilman Michael Kokinda suggested the borough hire someone to open the center for parties and to sweep floors and do other general cleanup after events.Councilman Michael Alabovitz said a cleanup fee should be included in the rate charged.wSteber said there is presently a $100 security deposit charged to all parties for renting the facility and several times recently that deposit wasn't returned because of the poor condition of the center after the respective event.Council will look into hiring someone for helping with community center events and will consider raising rates for 2016.
