With the closing of the sale of Schuylkill County's nursing home less than two weeks away, commissioners on Wednesday agreed to extend the contract of its management firm for $10,000 a month through Oct. 31.
Service Access Management, hired in 2012 to oversee operations at the struggling home, will be paid $50 an hour for services rendered after that date. The county is selling Rest Haven, in Schuylkill Haven, to Investment 360 of Lakewood, New Jersey, for $10.9 million. The closing is scheduled for Sept. 1.A year ago, the county decided to sell the 142-bed nursing home after having to give it about $2 million a year for two years to make ends meet. The shortfall was mostly due to the actual costs of care outpacing Medicaid reimbursements. It costs $220 a day to care for each resident; Medicaid reimburses the home $175. In 2013 and 2014, the county gave Rest Haven $4.6 million to make ends meet. In July, it transfused another $500,000.In other matters Wednesday, commissioners awarded a $467,176 Schuylkill Township water line project to Doli Construction, Chalfont, Bucks County. The Community Development Block Grant project is in the village of Tuscarora.Doli was the sole bidder. The project involves installing a new eight-inch iron water line, service lines, and fire hydrants. Also, commissioners approved extending for another 10 years a Keystone Economic Opportunity Zone for the Mahanoy Business Park in Ryan and Mahanoy townships. The Schuylkill Economic Development Corporation has filed an application with the state Department of Community and Economic Development for the extension. The county hopes the tax-exempt status will help attract more businesses to the park.In 2013, the Commonwealth Financing Authority gave $1.1 million to the Schuylkill Municipal Authority for water and sewer upgrades to the park, which is on either side of I-81.
