A Lansford man is behind bars in Carbon County Correctional Facility after police say he attempted to steal a water fountain from a priest's residence.
Russel B. Woodward, 48, of West Patterson Street, was arraigned Wednesday before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford and sent to prison in default of $3,000 monetary bail.Woodward was charged by Lansford police with two counts of burglary, two counts of defiant trespass, one count of theft by unlawful taking and one count of public drunkeness.Officer Joshua Tom of the Lansford Police Department says in his affidavit that Woodward was taken into custody while attempting to open a door on the neighboring property. Police said he was visibly intoxicated and was wearing a gray T-shirt, stone washed jean shorts and white socks. He was still wearing this apparel, including the dirty socks without shoes, during his arraignment.He made no comments during the arraignment.The incident happened at 116 E. Bertsch St., Lansford, which is also the address of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church.The affidavit said police received a call at 10:40 a.m. from a man in the 100 block of East Bertsch Street, stating someone was attempting to break into homes.Police said he was attempting to gain entry to the backyard of 116 E. Bertsch St., which is owned by the Rev. Vasyl Chepelskyy.Officer Tom said he was informed Woodward attempted to break a lock on the gate, but failed.He then began dumping water from a small water fountain displayed in the front of the property. Police said he began pulling on the power cord which was plugged into an outlet.A witness, Edward Kusko, was across the street and stopped Woodward from stealing the fountain, officer Tom wrote.
