A Carbon County woman was sentenced to a state prison term on Tuesday after pleading guilty in a drug dealing case.
She was one of six defendants in pending drug-related cases to enter a guilty plea before President Judger Roger N. Nanovic II.Search warrantSherry Ann Deroach, 34, of Summit Hill, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance-heroin and was immediately sentenced to serve 21 months to seven years in a state correctional institution.Deroach was arrested on Jan. 29 when agents of the state Attorney General's office, the county drug task force and borough police executed a search warrant at 106 E. Holland St.Found in the home were numerous bundles of heroin and drug paraphernalia used in the sale of the drug.Deroach, Nanovic noted, spent time in a state prison on drug counts filed in Monroe County. She was also on parole from the Monroe sentence at the time of her arrest in the Carbon case. She is also facing a state parole revocation hearing.Nanovic also ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, supply a DNA sample and pay court costs of about $1,000.She was given credit for 202 days already spent in jail on the charges.Other pleasOther defendants who entered pleas to drug counts included:John Dominic Ferko III, 30, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance-heroin.He was arrested by agents of the AG office in the 700 block of East Bertsch Street in Lansford after he sold 30 baggies of heroin to a confidential informant. A search of his vehicle at the time resulted in 74 more baggies being found.Nanovic deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.Matthew J. Sabol, 29, of Nesquehoning, pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance-heroin.He was arrested on Aug. 29 along Broad Street by Beaver Meadows police during a traffic stop.Sabol was a passenger in the vehicle and was found to have 54 packets of heroin on his person.Sabol was in the Salvation Army inpatient rehabilitation program for a heroin addiction but was unsuccessfully discharged for violating the rules. He said he had a cellphone charger, which violated the rule on no electronic devices allowed.Nanovic sentenced him to serve one to 12 months in prison, get a drug and alcohol evaluation, and zero tolerance imposed on D&A use.He was given credit for 69 days spent in prison on the charge and was paroled.Tanya Louise (Piccolo) Partington, 25, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested by Mahoning Township police for an incident on March 3 in the parking lot of the Carbon Plaza Mall. A charge of possession of a controlled substance-heroin, was dropped in a plea bargain.Nanovic placed her on probation for a year and imposed zero tolerance on drug and alcohol use.James Tyler Volpe, 20, of Albrightsville, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on Dec. 28, 2014, by Kidder Township police following a vehicle stop along Lake Drive.At the stop officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Found inside was marijuana and a pipe used to smoke it.Nanovic imposed a fine of $750.Shamel Brandan Thomas, 31, of Berwick, Columbia County, pleaded to one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana.He was arrested on May 7 by state police at Fern Ridge following a vehicle stop along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township. Found in the car was marijuana. Also found in the car were four boxes containing 500 baggies each of the type used to package heroin. No heroin was found. Thomas said he purchased the baggies for another individual.Nanovic imposed a fine of $500.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
