Jim Thorpe is working new on snow ordinance

It may have been over 90 degrees for consecutive days, but Jim Thorpe Borough is already preparing for winter.

Borough council announced Thursday night it's revising a snow ordinance."There will be no parking on the even side of the street during a snow emergency," Mayor Michael Sofranko said.Residents will be notified by the borough when a snow emergency is going into effect.A second phone call will take place when the snow emergency ends."After the plow hits the street, ticketing will commence," Sofranko said. The current system involves one side of the street being cleared of parked cars depending on whether the storm falls on an odd or even day of the month. The opposite side of the street is then plowed the following day.Borough police, however, wrote over 200 tickets for violating the ordinance last winter.Around 150 of them were handed out during one storm."We'll go out and ticket all day because it is what we are asked to do, but if you want my personal opinion, the system isn't working," Police Chief Joe Schatz said in February. "For the people that think we enjoy doing it, we don't."Residents will have a chance to review and comment on the new ordinance before council votes on its adoption.
