Forest warden event Saturday

The Weiser Forest Fire Warden's Association will host the 100th anniversary celebration of the Pennsylvania Forest Fire Wardens 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Owl Creek Reservoir in Tamaqua.

This event is free and open to the public. The highlight attraction will be the 1924 Mount Pleasant fire tower. The original tower was located next to the Schuylkill Airport, behind what is now the SPCA. The tower has been rebuilt at the Owl Creek Reservoir and down sized to one flight of stairs for those who are height squeamish but remains authentic in the cabin and construction."The design changed over the years. Now they use flat galvanized steel. It used to be iron squeezed together and then bolted," said Frank Snyder of the Weiser Association.Forest firefighter crews will also give demonstrations on how to put out a fire and the type of tools used. A forest fire prevention trail will be marked off and Snyder will speak about the damage sustained to trees after a fire is extinguished.A talk on the effect forest fires will also be given."People don't realize spring is the worst time for fire here on the east side. The leaves on the trees are gone and the sun dries out the forest floor. Once there is leaf coverage on the trees everything stays wet," Snyder said."Everyone thinks it's summer because that's when the west has the big fires."Along with games, Smokey Bear will be ready for his close-up at the kid friendly event.
