Panther president faces bad check charge

Panther Valley School Board president Jeff Markovich faces a misdemeanor charge of passing bad checks.

An affidavit of probable cause filed was filed by Summit Hill police against Markovich, 54, of Summit Hill.According to the affidavit, on April 13, a man came to the police station to report that he had received a $680 check from Markovich of Anthracite Welding. The check was written on April 5. The man cashed it on April 7, but on April 10 the check was returned stamped "NSF," refused by the bank for lack of funds.On April 13, the bank notified Markovich the check had been returned to the man. A certified letter was sent to Markovich and delivery attempts were made on April 20, April 25 and May 5. The certified mail was refused. Due to the lack of funds, the man incurred $64 in charges, for a total of $744.Markokovich, contacted early Thursday, said the check was a paycheck to a "disgruntled contractor" and that he put a stop on it after finding the man's work was of poor quality.The man also broke equipment and kicked in the door to his office, Markovich said."It's going to be settled in court," he said.Markovich faces a preliminary hearing at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 19.Earlier this year, the Tamaqua Area School District was awarded a $3,316 judgment against Markovich and his wife, Michelle.
