A new name was added to the plaque in the Slatington Public Library that allows members of the community to honor their loved ones.
Jenny and John Kemps, from Emmaus, donated $1,000 to the library in memory of their son, Schyler Kemps. In return, library officials dedicated a space on the plaque for Schyler, who died in 2009 at the age of 26 from a heroin overdose. The couple, who own Celebration Fireworks in Slatington, stopped by the library on Tuesday evening to see Schyler's name on display."Our son was an avid reader, and we wanted to donate to a cause that meant a lot to him," Jenny said. The slate plaque was donated to the library by the children of Louise Hallman in 2010 in her memory.Hallman, from Slatington, died in 2010 at the age of 83 from natural causes. The plaque now hangs on the wall in the front of the library. Anyone who donates $1,000 to the Slatington Library can place the name of a loved one, living or dead, on the plaque. The name plates are created through Slatington Library Board Member Hali Kuntz and her husband Ron Kuntz of Walnutport. They get help from the connections they made when they owned the sporting goods store in Slatington to have the plates manufactured and placed on the plaque.Wanda Owens, president of the board of directors for the library, expressed her gratitude for the Kemps' donation. "This plaque gives us the chance to represent people in the community that want to honor their loved ones, and lets us show how grateful we are for their contributions," Owens said.
