Carbon man sent to state prison for indecent assault

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a state prison term on Monday afternoon on charges of indecent assault and corruption of a minor.

Darin Keith Kemmerer Sr., 42, of Lehighton, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve a total of nine to 36 months on the two charges. Kemmerer previously pleaded guilty to the counts.Kemmerer was charged by Lehighton police for an incident that occurred during an overnight stay of a church activity on Nov. 23, 2014. The victim was a then 11-year-old girl. He admitted having inappropriate contact with the girl.Defense Attorney Jennifer Rapa, of the public defenders office, said Kemmerer was very embarrassed and sorry for what occurred. She said Kemmerer was under a lot of stress at the time and is raising four children.Kemmerer told Serfass, "If there is one thing I could take back it is this." He added, "This is not me. The only thing I have to look forward to is my children."Serfass said he reviewed all the facts of the case and the presentence investigation report prepared by the adult probation in deciding a proper punishment. Serfass noted that Kemmerer was evaluated by the state sexual offenders assessment board and found not to be a violent sexual predator, but added that he still must register as a sexual offender under the provisions of Megan's Law.Serfass said, "This was an 11-year-old girl who you victimized."In addition to the jail term Serfass ordered Kemmerer must register as a sexual offender for the next 15 years, have no contact with the victim, pay court costs of about $1,000, and render a total of 250 hours of community service when released on parole.Serfass gave Kemmerer until 9 a.m. Aug. 24 to report to the county prison. He will later be transferred to a state prison.
