Jail for high-speed chase

A woman who led police on a high-speed chase that ended when she crashed her vehicle, was sentenced to a county prison term Monday morning in Carbon County court.

Victoria Hartley, 19, of Bangor, formerly of Jim Thorpe, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve three to 18 months in prison followed by one year of probation on a charge of fleeing and eluding police, a felony three offense. She previously pleaded to the count and a charge of driving under the influence. She was arrested on Nov. 28, 2013, after Franklin Township police observed her driving a vehicle erratically along Route 248. When police attempted to stop her, she fled, leading police on a chase. The chase ended when she crashed the vehicle into an embankment in Lehighton, rolling the vehicle over. She then got out of the vehicle and fled on foot, but was apprehended a short time later. On Monday in court, Hartley said she didn't remember the chase or much of what happened. She claimed the only thing she remembered was eating a pastry prior to the incident. She also claimed that she didn't know she was pregnant at the time of the incident. She has since given birth to a boy.Hartley then told Nanovic she suffers from epilepsy and sometimes has seizures. She also said she felt the pastry she had may have been drugged and blamed a cousin for that, the same cousin whose car she took and led police in the case.Nanovic told her, "This is a bizarre story," indicating he had a hard time believing it.Nanovic said she placed a lot of people in danger by her actions including herself, police and innocent people on the road that day.In addition to the jail term Nanovic ordered Hartley to pay a fine of $1,000, continue her outpatient counseling, supply a DNA sample, get a mental health evaluation, and her license suspended for a year. Nanovic ruled the DUI charge merged with the fleeing count for sentencing purposes. She was given credit for four days spent in jail on the charges. She will begin the jail term at 6 p.m. on Aug. 14 and serve it on consecutive weekends.
