Route 309 closed in Tamaqua due to water main break

A water main break sometime after 2 p.m. Thursday has closed Pine Street, Route 309, in Tamaqua, which remains closed to traffic.

Work crews from Tamaqua Borough and the Tamaqua Area Water Authority were notified of a suspected failure in the infrastructure and are readying equipment for repairs.

Shortly before 4 p.m. utility trucks were arriving to mark safe excavation points.

The immediate area affected is the 500 block of Pine Street. At the site, water can be seen bubbling up from lengthy cracks in the macadam of what is a narrow, one-lane section of the roadway running parallel to the Little Schuylkill River.

Parking will be prohibited in the affected area. As of 4 p.m., no vehicles were seen parked on the block.

"My car was parked right at the spot of the leak and a friend passing through noticed it and called me to move it," said Rolling Mill Avenue resident Audrey Weaver.

Volunteers of Tamaqua Fire Police are rerouting all northbound traffic, directing the flow from Pine Street onto Elm Street and then north on Schuylkill Avenue where it can reconnect with Route 309.

Some residents in the area are reporting low water pressure.

Repairs could last into the night.
