Kids raise funds to fight cancer

Two kids in Palmerton are raising money for cancer research this weekend, one glass of lemonade at a time.

Tyler and Cassie Hager are hosting Alex's Lemonade Stand outside of Hager Furniture Company in Palmerton today and Saturday in conjunction with the Palmerton Sidewalk Sale. The proceeds will go to the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, which raises money and awareness for pediatric cancer.Tyler, 10, and Cassie, 8, are the children of Jeff and Melissa Hager of Palmerton. Jeff owns Hager Furniture and gives his kids the space on the sidewalk outside of the store for their stand. This is the third year that the siblings have held the lemonade stand. Last year, they raised over $1,500 and hope to exceed that amount this year. The kids were inspired to take up the worthy cause when one of their dad's employees lost their daughter, Camryn Zelienka, to a brain tumor at the age of 6. The first lemonade stand was in Camryn's memory. "It means a lot to us. That's why we do this every year. We don't want any more kids to suffer from cancer," Tyler said.Melissa noted how proud she is of her kids, as they organize everything on their own every year. "It's amazing to see them doing this. I do a lot of fundraising myself and I think it rubbed off on them," she said.Along with selling both pink and regular lemonade, the kids will also be selling an assortment of muffins and cupcakes.Alex and Cassie also had their stand open on Thursday when the sidewalk sale started. They will be outside today and Saturday for the majority of the day. In the case of inclement weather, they will move the stand inside to Hager's Furniture.
