One of four in robbery attempt charged with homicide count

One of four people charged with a robbery attempt in Schuylkill County is also facing attempted homicide charges.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said the incident occurred at 4:07 a.m. on Monday at the Country Squire Motel, located at 300 Route 61 South, in North Manheim Township.The four charged have been identified as Dennis C. Shafe, 30, of Pottsville, Ashley Marie Stumhoffer, 26, of Schuylkill Haven, John Joseph Luback, 31, and Frank David Vannicola, 25, both of Minersville.According to troopers Stumhoffer drove the other three to the motel. All three males went to an occupied room at the motel and one of them kicked at the door. The room was occupied by Adam Sturdean, 32, and Isaiah Dewan, 31.The three were invited into the room. Sturdean and Shafe left the room and went outside. There was a shot fired by Shafe. The two then returned to the room after the shot. There were no injuries.Neighbors call 9-1-1 after hearing the shot. Troopers, along with police from Schuylkill Haven borough and Penn State Campus police responded.Luback, Shafe and Vannicola ran. Luback and Shafe gave up and were arrested. Vannicola continued to run but was arrested later in the day by Schuylkill Haven police.Shafe was charged with criminal attempt at criminal homicide, robbery and theft. Luback, Vannicola and Stumhoffer were all charged with robbery and theft.Police did not indicate if the suspects are still in custody after being charged.
