John Bova of Lower Shaft, near Shenandoah, hoists a shovel during coal-moving competition held Sunday in Lansford during the Coal Miners Heritage Festival at No. 9 Mine and Museum. Bova is the son of the late Louis Bova, a coal miner buried with two others 330 feet below ground in the infamous 1963 Sheppton Mine Disaster. The others were rescued after 14 days, but Louis Bova never made it out and his body remains entombed at the site. John Bova took part in the competition to honor his late father in an especially moving tribute.
