Palmerton grad cites scholarship for success

Never doubt the power of giving a person the tools needed to achieve their goals.

Palmerton Area High School alumnus Tyler Meinhart received the Nanovic Scholarship the first year it was offered, and has since gone on to a successful teaching career.Meinhart was the co-recipient of the $50,000 scholarship during his senior year at Palmerton High School. Following his graduation in 2006, he used the money to fund his undergraduate study at the University of Pittsburgh, where he majored in history."Receiving the scholarship meant a great deal to me and my family, and still does. It let me focus on my school work and allowed me to take the next step in my academic career," Meinhart said.He would go on to graduate from Pittsburgh, followed by obtaining a master's degree in teaching from Johns Hopkins University. In 2011, Meinhart was hired as a history teacher at Marriotts Ridge High School in Columbia, Maryland. He was voted as the 2015 teacher of the year for the school and gave the keynote address for the class of 2015's commencement ceremony."It was very exciting considering I had only been teaching for four years," Meinhart said. With all of his success that he has found in his career, he still attributes most of his accomplishments to the Nanovic Scholarship that started him on his path."Even though I acquired it almost 10 years ago, I'm still very grateful," Meinhart said.
