Have fun, learn about nature at open house

The Carbon County Environmental Education Center in Summit Hill will be holding an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The center, which has been in operation since 1985, functions as a learning tool on the outdoors for the public as well as a wildlife rehabilitation center."There's definitely a need for a place like this to educate people on what's in our environment, because we're part of that environment. It's more than just explaining what something in nature is, it's about explaining why it's important," naturalist Jeannie Carl said. The center will be holding activities for children, like build-a-bug, and giving tours of its boardwalk featuring different birds of prey, such as eagles, hawks, and owls.Center members will also talk about the animals that are on display inside the building, like turtles, snakes, ferrets, chinchillas and rabbits.Along with wildlife education, there will also be a basket raffle. The baskets were put together and donated by various supporting businesses. Some of the baskets include survival, car wash, knitting, fishing and kids' baskets. The raffle drawing will be at 3:30 p.m. Winners do not have to be present. Proceeds from the raffle will go toward the center's free and low-cost public programs.Carl says that the open house's main goal is to use a fun event as a way to educate."It's going to be pretty low-key and informal. Just come in, ask questions, browse around, and enjoy yourself," Carl said.
