Two head to court, others fail to appear

A large number of defendants failed to appear for preliminary hearings before District Judge Stephen Bayer in Tamaqua, last week. Two defendants who did appear, and elected to have their hearings, had their cases bound over to county court.

Thomas Antolick, 58, of Zion Grove, had a hearing on charges of fraudulent use of a title registration, driving with a suspended/revoked license and operating a vehicle without insurance. The charges were filed by Rush Township Police Sgt. Duane Frederick in connection with an incident on March 7.Antolick was released on his own recognizance.Bernard J. Hellebrand Jr., 51, of 304 W. Phillips St., Coaldale, had charges of retail theft and receiving stolen property held for court after his hearing. He was charged by Rush Township patrolman Jeffrey Tanner after a Dec. 24, 2014, shoplifting incident.Hellebrand was released on his own recognizance.The defendants who failed to appear in court include:Victor Barry Craig, 28, of 107 S. Sheridan St., McAdoo charged with criminal attempt to commit indecent assault and invasion of privacy by McAdoo patrolman William Curilla. The charges are from a Feb. 25 incident.Eshawn Wesley Harrell, 21, of 1527 Von Storch Ave., Scranton charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, illegal window tint, driving without a license, failure to change his address and underage drinking. The charges were filed by Curilla after a May 26, 2014, incident.Stephen Rowan, 30, of 13B Wilbur St., Weatherly charged with providing false identification to law enforcement, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance and driving unsafe equipment. Curilla filed the charges after a Nov. 26, 2014, traffic stop.Walter James Deetz, 44, of 234 E. High St., Coaldale charged with fraudulent use of a title registration, driving without a license, operating a vehicle without insurance and fraudulent use/removal of a license plate by Frederick. The charges stem from a Feb. 23 incident.Michael J. Kabana, 25, of 15 W. Ruddle St., Coaldale charged with DUI of a controlled substance, disregard of a traffic lane and careless driving after an April 19 incident. The charges were filed by Tamaqua patrolman Joseph Krebs.Edwin C. Guth, 62, of Drums charged with writing a bad check by Kline Township Police Chief John Petrilla. The charges stem from a Feb. 7 incident.Beverly Ann Gilbert of New Philadelphia charged with writing a bad check by Tamaqua Cpl. Henry Woods. The charges are from a Nov. 22, 2014, incident.Warrants could be issued for each of the defendants who didn't appear for their hearings.Brian JosephGallagher, 38, of 15 Birch Ave., Barnesville, had charges of simple assault and harassment withdrawn. The charges were filed by Rush Township patrolman Adam Sinton after an April 28 incident.
