Defendants sentenced in Carbon
Several defendents were sentenced by Carbon County Judge Joseph J. Matika this week.
Barbara J. Cassium, 68, of Northampton, was placed on probation for one year on a charge of persistent disorderly conduct. She will also have to do 50 hours of community service.Cassium, who was arrested by Lansford police following an incident on June 5, 2014, at the borough police station, was found guilty by a county jury after a trial on June 2.Arresting officer Brian Horos indicated he had a man in custody who was in possession of marijuana.Cassium, the defendant's grandmother, showed up at the police station and became irate, complaining about police harassment. After leaving the station, Cassium raised a disturbance outside, police said, which led to her arrest.Alphonso Dalessio, 37, of Bethlehem, was sent to state prison for one to two years on a charge of criminal use of a communications facility.He was arrested on Jan. 31, 2014, by agents of the Attorney General's office in the 200 block of East Holland Street in Summit Hill after he sold heroin to a confidential informant.Matika also ordered him to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation with zero tolerance to drug and alcohol use, as well as urine sampling.In a related charge of persistent disorderly conduct, Matika ordered Dalessio to be on one year of state probation, to run consecutive to the criminal use sentence.Paul Joseph Rayno, 56, of Hazleton, who pleaded guilty to a charge of DUI, was ordered to serve 48 hours in the Carbon County Correctional Facility.Rayno was arrested on Oct. 26, 2014, by Weatherly police. His level was 0.12 BAC.He is to report at 6 p.m. July 18. Within 14 days of his release, Rayno must make contact with Luzerne County Probation officials to make arrangements to serve five months and 28 days in that program.Matika also suspended his license for one year, ordered him to have zero tolerance for drug use and urine sampling, and levied a fine of $750 against the man.Jerry Samuel Zemlan, 49, of Lansford, was sentenced to six months of probation on a charge of driving under the influence.He was arrested on Nov. 28, 2013, along Catawissa Street by Nesquehoning police. A test showed 0.27 BAC.Zemlan must also render 25 hours of community service and had a $300 fine levied against him.In all of the cases, the defendants were ordered to pay costs associated with their sentences, including monthly probation fees and Live Scan costs associated with their processings.
