Minor leaguers heading to all-star games

With the Fourth of July celebrations behind us, it could mean only one thing: All-Star Baseball.

As most of the major league baseball fans gear up to watch the Kansas City Royals face the National League All-Stars, we can take a moment to look at true all-star teams that may be more representative than its highly publicized and more popular counterpart. To start, the top two prospects in the Phillies minor league system pitcher Aaron Nola and shortstop J.P. Crawford are headed to the 2015 Futures game to be played at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. The Futures game is a sample of the best that has yet to burst onto the scene.Lehigh Valley's dismal record left just one player to be named to the International League All-Star Team.Infielder Tyler Henson will make a trip to Omaha for the Triple-A All-Star Game where the IL All-Stars face off with the Pacific Coast League All-Stars. Finally, three IronPigs will play in the Pan-Am games and two Reading Phillies are named to the Double-A Eastern League All-Star game on July 15.NOLA LEARNINGAaron Nola is learning on the job at Triple-A. Last Monday, the 22-year-old struggled through five innings with an umpire that was unyielding in his ever-tightening strike zone."You are going to get squeezed, it's part of the game," Nola said after the game. "But my mentality is not to let that affect any part of me or any of my pitches, any of my emotions."His start to the game was not something he does normally: he walked the first batter."He battled and that is not entirely a bad thing. His fast ball just kept running off the plate," manager Dave Brundage said. The righty had the confidence to keep throwing pitches and working out of jams after uncharacteristically walking three batters. After five innings and 90 pitches, his night was done and miraculously, the youngster left with a 7-0 lead. The key was getting 18-of-23 first pitch strikes, which gave him room to maneuver."You're not going to have your best stuff every time you go out," Nola said. "I feel like when I don't have my best stuff I learn how to pitch. I learn how to get guys out when things aren't working."On Saturday, Nola pitched a no-decision quality start giving up three runs through six innings. The IronPigs spotted him a 2-0 lead in the fourth but Nola gave up three the next inning with a two-run blast that gave Rochester the lead. The IronPigs went on to win the game, 4-3, but the education process of a young all-star is in full swing.HOT HENSONTO OMAHATyler Henson's year was far from his typical effort and almost a laughable suggestion for an All-Star selection. He has shown flares of brilliance but with sporadic playing time his hitting suffered."He's been struggling and he's been battling," Brundage said. "No one's been in the cage more and getting extra hitting than he has."The work and patience paid off. Over the past eight games, the utility player has five mult-hit games to his credit and an eight-game hit streak where he is batting .385 (15-39, a homer, 10 RBIs, four doubles, and seven runs scored)."I was trying to hit the ball harder and hit the ball farther," Henson said of his troubles, " I just tried to slow it down and get the barrel on the ball."Currently batting .270, the All-Star worthy statistic he has is his average with runners in scoring position. He leads the team with a .375 average (24-for-64) and 36 RBIs. To take it one notch further, he is batting .500 (16-for-32) with runners in scoring position and two outs.TORONTO BOUNDLehigh Valley outfielder Brian Bogusevic and relievers Chris Leroux and Adam Loewen will take leave of the team and travel to Toronto to participate in the 2015 Pan-Am Games. The games, held every four years, will feature teams from around the globe in playing a variety of sports including baseball.Bogusevic will represent team USA and Leroux and Loewen will pitch for Team Canada. The Canadian Team will feature former IronPig stalwarts Phillippe Aumont (P), Pete Orr (IF), and Tyson Gillies (OF).The Olympic event styled-games will run from July 10-26 with IronPigs trickling back to the 'Pig-pen when their team bows out.EASTERN LEAGUEALL-STARSReading Fightin' Phils pitcher Zach Eflin (5-4, 2.88) will join Crawford (.271, two HR, 13 RBIs) in the 2015 Sullivan Tire All-Star Classic held at Hadlock field in Portland, Maine. Crawford is just the latest of the great shortstops to roll through Reading. His talent could place him with the likes of Mike Schmidt, Ryne Sandberg, Larry Bowa, Jimmy Rollins, Julio Franco and Mickey Morandini.
