Defendants plead in DUI cases
Five defendants entered guilty pleas to driving under the influence charges on Tuesday in Carbon County court.
Judge Steve R. Serfass accepted pleas from the following:Jeffrey Aaron Moyer, 31, of Parryville, was arrested on Feb. 4, 2014, along Route 248 at Parryville by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substanceHe also pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance. During the stop troopers found three bags of heroin in the vehicle.Sentencing was deferred so Moyer could obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.Kandis K. Exner, 45, of Lehighton, was arrested on April 28, 2013, along Route 248 in Bowmanstown by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.Exner was previously placed in the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Dispositon probation program but was revoked for violating conditions.Serfass sentenced her to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, pay a fine of $1,000, have her license suspended for a year, and render 25 hours of community service. She was given credit for four days already spent in jail on the charge and was paroled.Cadi Lyn Wernett, 26, of Jim Thorpe, was arrested on Feb. 13, 2014, in the 100 block of Bridge Street by Lehighton police. A test showed 0.15 BAC.Serfass sentenced her to serve five days to six months in jail, pay a fine of $300, have her license suspended for one year, and render 25 hours of community service.Wernett will serve the jail term beginning on July 10 at 5 p.m. and serve three days, then July 17, and serve two days.Robert Paul Ruzicka II, 54, of Lehighton, was arrested on March 14 along Delaware Avenue in Palmerton by state police at Lehighton. A test showed 0.21 BAC.A first offense, he was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.Ayla B. Hoffman, 25, of Nesquehoning, was arrested on July 30, 2012, along Route 209 by Jim Thorpe police. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.She was previously placed in the ARD program but was revoked for violating conditions.Serfass sentenced her to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, pay a fine of $1,000, have her license suspended for a year, and render 25 hours of community service.She was given credit for three days already served in jail on the charges and was paroled.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
